I’ve been in biz for 10+ years AND I never considered hiring a coach until only a few years ago. I kinda wished I did before, but I have to embrace my journey right?
I’m so excited to share with you today some of Lindsay’s tips on this important topic. I found Lindsay on Pinterest (this is how powerful Pinterest can be). I joined a challenge she was having and moved on to hiring her as a 1:1 coach to help me get all my ideas out of my head + I also joined her group coaching program + hired her again for some 1:1 attention.
Lindsay is an amazing coach, and the thing I love most about her is her positive outlook on everything + she is so kind and cares deeply for the success of her female mom entrepreneur friends.
Here is what I asked Lindsay to talk to us about today!

You need a coach, like yesterday, so you’ve been stalking at least 5 of them online. You’re comparing their coaching packages, you’re following them on Instagram, and basically fangirling all of them – just hoping to catch their eye. Because the first one who does, they might be the lucky one who gets to work with you!
You imagine yourself getting on a Zoom call with them and you think of all of the questions you want to ask. You picture yourself three months from now and you can only imagine how amazing your life will be then because THEY have all the magical answers!
Cue the screeching tires sound effect…
Hate to break it to you, but no, your coach does not have all of the magical answers nor does she know where that secret website is that unlocks all of your success that you know is just hanging there right in front of you…. And if that’s a total bummer to you, then keep reading because you need to know a few things before you sign up for that irresistible payment plan.
1) DON’T EXPECT YOUR COACH DO THE WORK FOR YOU
Do not expect to hand over all of your passwords to your coach so they can make everything all better. It is your job to show up for yourself and learn. Ask questions, get feedback, talk things through, and LISTEN. Think about the money you’ve invested in yourself and how you get the most out of your time together. You hired someone to mentor you – not to work for you.
Pay close attention to how your coach works with you and take note of the things you like and dislike. In fact, journaling about your experience and documenting your growth is very important and beneficial to your time together. Your time together goes so fast and it’s really enjoyable to look at who you were in the beginning compared to where you are now.
2) BE PREPARED TO GET A BIT UNCOMFORTABLE
The best sessions and the biggest breakthroughs happen when there is a lot of resistance in the beginning. Did your coach just suggest you do something that scares you/makes you rethink this whole thing? A good coach is going to ask you why you feel the way you feel and then they’re going to keep digging. For example, let’s say your coach suggests you do a webinar, but you’ve never done one before and you can’t possibly show your face, remember what to say, AND sell! That’s craziness! Huge red flag here.
It’s not the webinar. It’s not the tech and it’s certainly not just a bad idea your coach came up with. It’s you. You don’t feel confident enough to do something you’ve never done before so you’re protecting yourself from feeling like a flop! Your coach will hopefully mentor you to a place where you get to the point where you could do a webinar all day every day. Is it going to be super uncomfortable at first? Probably. But you hired them to show you new strategies and techniques, right? So, go with it.
3) DON’T GET HUNG UP ON THE FLASHY RESULTS
Did your coach have great sales copy and now you’re clinging to those flashy sentences and making them your own goals? Good luck with that. Just because someone had a 6 figure launch with the same coach you’re working with, DOES NOT mean you will too. Identifying with someone else’s achievements is one thing, but not being aware of the backstory of how they even got there and basically assigning that responsibility to your coach is a set up for a huge let down.
Your coach will work with what she has and she will hopefully guide you in the right direction. Will you have the same results as everyone else? No, you could actually have less. But you could actually have more!
Before hiring a coach think about why you’re hiring them. Are you just looking for easy answers and fast results or do you really want to learn from someone you really admire and respect? Your coach will be your friend and someone you love to brag about working with. Choose wisely and be open to all of the amazing possibilities out there for you.
